Of Leaders and Influencers

Barbara Lohse, PhD, RDN, President SNEB
Susan Johnson, PhD, Senior Associate Editor, JNEB
“Follow so I may lead” is ironically an apt expression for a new type of leader called an “Influencer.” Typically, influencers generate interest about something through social media, and measure success by the number of followers they have. An influencer is also defined as one who exerts influence, inspiring or guiding the actions of others.1 To us, that means that professional nutrition educators and behaviorists must seek to be influencers, not just with social media followers but with colleagues, collaborators, funders, supervisors and well, the list can go on! Attaining the skill set to accomplish this depends on many factors and since SNEB members represent professionals diverse in age, experience, focus, training, and goals we conducted a membership survey to solicit the interest level in developing leadership skills.

Apparently, this seems to be an important topic since more than 15% of SNEB members responded in a short time. In fact, 89% of respondents were interested or would be interested in skill building or training related to leadership. Slightly more than half (61%) had participated in some leadership training/skill building activities. These included training from WIC, extension, or a university program as well as in-depth training through Robert Wood Johnson, Danone, Harvard Business School or through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. More than half were willing to pay from $1500 to $3000 for some training and 10% would pay more than $3000. Of note is that 25% felt they would be willing to invest in their own development and pay directly for this kind of training and another 35% indicated that the cost would be jointly covered by their employer and themselves.

Respondents selected the full range of options when denoting how much of the training should be tailored to individual development versus a set of core components from which all individuals could benefit. Finally, keen interest was shown in having scholarships available, approval for CEUs and either virtual or a mix of virtual and face-to-face sessions, likely interfacing with the SNEB annual conference. Added comments reinforced the notion that SNEB members would thrive with influential leadership training. We are on the cusp of developing a fantastic opportunity for SNEB members to seize their role as THE influencers of nutrition education and behavior, but we need to hear more to make the program fit. To that end, we invite comments, ideas, and caveats in the comment space below. We need to be influenced!

The critical role that nutrition plays in healthcare has been backed up by research time and again. However, it was not until recently that the US federal government gave sincere consideration to the nutrition work force.1 In September 2022, the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutri tion, and Health—a national event focusing on ending hunger, reducing dietrelated disease, and eliminating disparities—highlighted the signifi cance of a diverse nutrition science workforce, including nutrition edu cators and researchers, to Americans’ wellbeing. Although media coverage was limited, the National Strategy2 (Strategy) at the live conference is up lifting news for professionals actively involved in nutrition education and health promotion. We consider this federal action as recognition of the impact that nutrition professionals have on dietrelated disease preven tion and treatment, and an indicator of growing employment opportuni ties in the nutrition and health fields. Notably, access to nutrition related services is outlined in the Strategy. Certain professionals, such as registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), public health experts, and re searchers from communities of color, are cited as having the ability to help expand access to nutritionrelated services, indicating the critical role they play in advancing health equity. Collaboration between and integra tion of nutrition research and the health care workforce is also encour aged to ensure successful implemen tation of the Strategy. To achieve the 2030 goal set by the BidenHarris Administration, it is clear that build ing the nutrition workforce is para mount. Meanwhile, this need draws attention to the recent changes that have been implemented for future nutrition professionals, specifically, RDNs who, starting in 2024, will be required to obtain a graduate degree.

The change approved by the Com mission on Dietetic Registration and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietet ics (Academy) aims to provide gradu ates with greater depth of knowledge and skills for practice.3−7 Benefits of the change include negating the need for a separate dietetic internship and creating a unique opportunity for entry into the profession.8 While the eligibility change aligns with the trend observed in many health pro fessions (e.g., physical therapists) in recent years,3−6 we want to empha size equity and inclusion in building the nutrition workforce, particularly adequate representation of professio nals from underserved communities. Fortunately, the need to improve diversity has been recognized by the Academy.9−11 To move toward a more diversified nutrition workforce, professionals from communities with a wide range of expertise are encour aged to work collaboratively to attract future nutrition professionals who are passionate about new areas of healthcare and meeting the increasingly diverse health and nutri tion needs of Americans.

We foresee future advances in nutrition expanding science knowl edge and access to healthcare, with growing recognition and respect for the nutrition science workforce. Advances in nutrition research, such as precision nutrition, will support targeted medical nutrition therapy treatments, while expansion of “food is/as medicine” can support bridging the clinic-community gap. By improving and diversifying the nutrition pipe-line, there will be expanded access to more equitable preventative services, and we could move one step closer to shifting the healthcare paradigm from treatment to prevention.

Nutrition Educators are Innovators… but it Takes Time

Lauren Haldeman, PhD Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Nutrition, Education and Behavior, Advancing Research, Practice, and Policy

As we enter National Nutrition Month, nutrition educators are particularly hard at work teaching communities about and promoting healthy food choices and physical activity behaviors. This is no easy task. One of the biggest challenges we face in this field is developing messages and materials that are easily translatable and transferrable to target audiences. We have nutrition educators working around the globe with communities representing all walks of life and using their expertise to develop and evaluate innovative approaches to meet these communities where they are in their health and nutrition journeys.

As I reflect on past JNEB issues, I am always amazed by the creativity and care of our nutrition educators in finding ways to improve the health and well-being of their unique communities. As an example, Buro et al1 designed a nutrition education intervention for adolescents and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), an underrepresented group in the nutrition literature. This 8-week virtual, theory-based intervention developed over 2 years was informed by adolescents and youth with ASD and their parents to ensure that messaging and activities were appropri
ate. The pilot study not only showed improvements in sugar consumption but also other factors such as self-efficacy and behavioral strategies surrounding healthy eating.

Another way we innovate in nutrition education is through the development of culturally adapted approaches to help close the gap for ethnic and racial groups that face health disparities. Maafs-Rodr{guez, Otis, and Mattei2 found a way to successfully promote healthy eating for kids in the Latin American Spanish-speaking community through social media platforms, by adapting the Kid’s Healthy Eating Plate. The cultural adaptation process included gaining feedback from native Spanish speaking professionals and community members to ensure that the materials were relevant and acceptable. Ultimately, findings showed that promotion of culturally appropriate nutrition education materials through internet channels earned active responses from the target audience.

These are just 2 of the many, many innovative nutrition education approaches developed by nutrition educators and published in JNEB. And while their successes are evident, the methods take time. It takes time to identify the best communication channels, time to gain input from target members of the community, time to consider multiple iterations of materials and messaging, time to implement and time to evaluate effectiveness. Prioritizing time is one of the many things that we as a profession do so well. Given that long term, sustained healthy behavior change is what we aim for, appropriate time allocation is critical for success.

We are fortunate that JNEB offers so many options, including Research Articles and Briefs, Systematic Reviews, Great Educational Materials (GEMs), Perspectives, and Reports, to highlight the innovative work being done nationally and internationally. I encourage readers to get the word out and promote our journal to colleagues who are looking to publish their great work. Let’s work together to widen our reach and increase our impact.

What’s JNEB Got to Do With It?
Lauren Haldeman, PhD

Online

When I think about the role JNEB has played throughout my career, it is clear to me that it was and continues to be integral to my development as a nutrition professional. I can pinpoint how I utilized JNEB at specific times over the course of my training as an undergraduate and graduate student, as well as in my positions as a public health/community nutritionist and a faculty member.

I was introduced to the field of nutrition education and the Journal of Nutrition Education (JNE), as it was called at that time, by Dr. Ruthe Eshleman, past SNEB president (1980-81) who taught me in my first nutrition class. Right away I knew I had found my passion. Dr. Eshleman taught several more of my classes for which I often referred to JNE as my primary resource. As a nutrition educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), I regularly used JNE to guide the development of nutrition education lesson plans and workshops, because it offered innovative approaches to reaching audiences, as well as practical applications of current research. When I returned to graduate school, I sought out JNEB articles to help hone my research questions and shape my methodologies. Two of the most influential issues for me were the 1995 special issue on The effectiveness of nutrition education and implications for nutrition education policy, programs, and research: a review of research 1 and the 1996 themed issue on Welfare reform and nutrition education.2
My first publication as first author was in JNEB for my master’s project titled Development of a Color-Coded Bilingual Food Label for Low-Literacy Latino Caretakers.3
It was a color publication of which I am still very proud. As an early career tenure track Assistant Professor hired by Dr. Laura Sims, past SNEB president (I997-98) and former JNEB editor, I always referred to JNEB to justify the work I was doing and to stay current on cutting edge, evidenced-based methodologies and interventions. Now, in mid-career, I use JNEB in my work almost every day as I continue teaching nutrition education application and theory classes, conducting research, and training our future nutrition professionals.

The breadth and depth of nutrition education research, practice and policy provided through JNEB is impressive. And the continual evolution of the journal to include emphases on the most salient topics in the field, varied methodological approaches, quality implications for practice and policy, and a commitment to inclusion at all levels is why JNEB has been my peer reviewed, scientific resource of choice throughout my career. It is my hope that it will also be first choice for our readers, members and future nutrition professionals.
