Hopefully you have now noticed that JNEB has transitioned from the EES system to Editorial Manager for manuscript submission, review, and processing. Although not without a few challenges, the JNEB team, Elsevier, and our Managing Editor worked together to assure that our authors, reviewers, and readership experienced few delays or errors. If you received something confusing or frustrating, we apologize.

Most of the JNEB awardees have been recognized. Our 8 Reviewers of Excellence can be found here. This award recognizes individuals who are not Board of Editor members and have supported JNEB with timely, high-quality reviews. This could be you next year! If you want to increase the quality of your reviews, JNEB has produced 2 webinars that are free: Becoming a Great Reviewer, available here and Using Mentored Peer Review for Journal Articles as a Strategy for Graduate Student Development available here. All of our ad hoc reviewers deserve recognition, and they are listed in the March 2019 issue as well as online. Soon to be announced are the annual Best Paper and Best GEM awards. Authors will once again be discussing their work at the SNEB annual conference. Check the meeting agenda for times and locations.

I am sure you read our supplemental Issue on the i-Cook project. Supplemental issues are sponsored by a team to highlight research in one issue. These papers are peer-reviewed as diligently as other papers and receive special attention as a collection. If you have questions on the supplemental issue process, feel free to contact me.

We also published our first SNEB-initiated position paper this year. We have a call for position paper topics to be considered each year at annual conference time, although topics can be submitted throughout the year. For information about submitting a topic for a position paper, click here.

To reach a broader audience, both editorials, From SNEB and From JNEB, are published in JNEB as well as on a blog at the SNEB website. The From SNEB editorials are written by the SNEB leadership, including Division Leaders. The From JNEB editorials are written by myself or the Associate Editors.

Our Journal Committee has been hard at work this year, investigating the best approaches to transparency in publishing and publication of data sets. We will guide our authors by developing best practices in both of these areas and providing professional development to assure our understanding of these complex issues. Ever vigilant to the needs of the growing JNEB, the Journal Committee is also developing a strategic growth plan for the editorial side of JNEB so that our business plan can reflect a solid foundation.

We look forward to seeing as many of you at annual conference as possible. In addition to the JNEB session, we will hold our Coffee with the Editors on Sunday, July 28 (7 to 8 am), where you can informally ask questions about the publication process, reviewing process, or individual projects. We will also be at our booth to hold mini-rapid reviews if you’d like to bring an abstract or details of your proposed paper.
